Collagen Joint Pain Osteoarthritis

Collagen

Numerous scientific studies have reported beneficial effects of collagen supplementation for a variety of problems including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and skin, nail and hair quality! Collagen is the most common protein found in the body and accounts for one third of the total body protein making up 6% of total body weight (remember 70% of body’s weight is water!). Studies show that we lose 1.5% of our body’s store of collagen every year after the age of 25. Thus by the time we get to 45 we have lost 30% of our store. When collagen is lost the functional characteristics of the tissue are lost e.g. skin loses elasticity leading to wrinkles, epidermal thinning, dryness, bruising and impaired healing.

There are numerous types of collagen hydrolysate in the marketplace; collagen hydrolysate can be derived from fish (marine), chicken sternum, porcine and bovine. However to date there is no clinical evidence that any collagen other than from a bovine source actually works. This research has been authenticated by the CRI (Collagen Research Institute) which is based in Kiel, Germany and headed by the world’s leading authority on Collagen Hydrolysate research Dr Steffen Oesser.

As a practitioner I am delighted to promote the nutrition range from Proto-Col Professionals which include ‘Collagen Pro Sport Plus Tablets’. Proto-col collagen tablets contain 1000mg/1 gram of type I and III hydrolysed collagen with an optimised type II grade. The jar contains 150 tablets with a recommended serving of 3 to 5 tablets per night. Taking it before bed maximises collagen uptake as during alpha sleep cycle (1st 2 hours of sleep) the body scavenges for proteins. You can not overdose on collagen as it is naturally occurring and the body excretes what it doesn’t require. It is derived from a bovine source so vegetarians need to be aware.
